Classic Lolita Fashion May Challenge The Mainstream Of Lolita Fashion Family

Lolita, the Japanese street fashion style that gives a modern spin to old-fashioned girlishness, is often divided into numerous subgenres. Among these styles is classic Lolita fashion which isn’t overwhelming cute and less reliant on frills and lace. There are cleaner cuts to classic Lolita fashion, and it is an elegant style but it still has a lot of Lolita elements like laces, detailed buttons and certain silhouettes of the dresses.

Unlike sweet Lolita often using bold use of pastels and gothic Lolita typically sticking with lots of black, classic Lolita is a lot more toned down and more wearable, if you don't want to stand out too much.

Basic Lolita Makeup Tutorial

Firstly, this following mentioned is detailed steps and key points on comprehensive lolita makeup. If you want to emphasize a specific style of lolita fashion families, you can check my previous article on characteristic, makeup and accessories of every lolita style.

Now, following me from these steps to help you have a charming makeup.

1. Wash your face with a light cleanser.

2. Apply concealer on any blemish, cut, impurity, under eye bags, etc. Don't go overboard! Too much looks cake-y.

3. Apply liquid foundation on the whole face, be careful not to smudge off the concealer. Be sure to get your neck and the sides of your face.

4. Apply a light blush to these spots. It is subtle and barely noticeable, but makes a difference overall! Use a light pink if you are light toned, a light lavender-pink if you have olive tones.

5. Apply bronzer here to give you more definition. Brown or dark gold are best.

6. Apply highlight to these areas, using a white, shimmer pink, or gold.

7. Last part for the complexion! Add blush to these spots. Sweep, don't make circles. Always use sweeping motions, never "draw" on your face. Baby pink, medium pink, or red are best. Avoid BRIGHT blushes. They look goofy. xD Also, you may want to apply a translucent finishing powder to help blend.

8. For the eyes, apply a medium brown eye shadow. Make a line along the top of the lid using the shadow. You may want to wet your brush to make it more definite.

9. Line the under eye and the corner of the top lid in a dark brown. Don't use black eyeliner if you are light skinned!

10. Add mascara, or if you like attach flase eyelashes.

11. If you have scragly eyebrows like me xD, use a little eyebrow gel to make them neat and defined.

12. Apply a red or pink lipstick and blot with a tissue and Add lipgloss to the circled areas above.

Yes, now you are done! Looking yourseleves into the mirror how pretty you are.

How To Make A Pretty Lolita Dress

As all known, Lolita fashion are always expensive hobby, and not everyone can afford. So many lolita fans and girls choose to make by themselves. With that in mind, this article is a detailed introduction about how to make a pretty lolita dress. Hope they will work for you.

1.Find patterns

When starting a Lolita dress, you need to know about what pattern you want you dress. Not only are these magazines filled with beautiful pictures and inspiration but also patterns in the back of several different types of dresses from various Lolita online stores.

2.Prepare materials

Eyelet Cotton Fabric: It is a cotton material, very light-weight that often has stitched embellishments such as flower designs, what earns it the name of ‘Eyelet’ are the stitched ‘eyes’ in the design on the fabric. Most of the edges are rounded and circular, or sharp triangles.
You will need less then 1/4, but sometimes it’s a little practical to buy excess.

Rotary Cutter: It’s a miniature pizza-pie cutter, for fabric. A fool proof method for anyone who cannot cut a straight line. However, a pair of scissors will be just fine.

Pinking Sheers: Like Scissors with the exception that the ‘arms’ are notched with a triangle pattern that when cutting fabric place the designs on the fabric

Light-weight Cotton: Easily found at your local fabric store, it is light weight and when pressed to the skin, the fabric is see-through. Since it will be used as a base, the see-through factor does not matter. You will need less then 1/4, but sometimes it’s a little practical to buy excess.
Raw Edge: The term used to describe the side of the fabric that was cut, because it was separated the it will fray.

3.Method

  • Using a measuring tape, form a circle around your wrist and slide the circle off of your hand. The measurement should be able to fit your wrist as well as getting off your hand with no problem.
  • Transfer the measurement to your eyelet and add 5/8″ inches to be used later. Cut out your eyelet, as well as your cotton make sure to add the 5/8” to the cotton. If you do not have Pinking Sheers, at this time you will want to fold the cotton upwards so that it is not visible from behind your eyelet. Once folded up a single time, fold it over again to that the raw edge is now encased.
  • Now align the eyelet and cotton together, matching up the top and bottom fold over–press if you wish–6mm. Sew together the eyelet with a basic straight stitch and cotton on the top side of the 6mm fold.
  • Flip the cuff over, your cotton should be the material on the top, and eyelet on the bottom. Trim the cotton with the Pinking Sheers so that it is not visible behind the eyelet. Using the zigzag stitch and sew along the 5/8″ measurement, using Pinking Sheers cut along the zigzag line.
  • Your wrist-cuff is completed, string out the length of your ribbon temporarily using a pin find a center and pin it to the back seam of your cuff. For a neat method, align the top of the ribbon to the stitch that affixed the fabrics together. Lengthen the ribbon to a size that pleases you, remembering that you will enough room to tie a ribbon and have extra room for the tails.
  • Thread your needle folding the thread around the needle’s eye and pulling out the tail to 24″ cut here, and knot both pieces together. Run the needle and thread through the cotton bottom layer, this will affix the knot at the bottom where it is not visible, when pierced through the cotton run over the ribbon. Directly above your “entrance point” push the needle through both layers. Essentially, what you will be doing is forming a vertical equal sign that will attach the ribbon to your cuff. Do this until you ‘equal sign’ is at least 1/4 of an inch, once you have achieved this size, on the back of your cuff, run the needle through the equal sign and knot. You will want at least five of these equal signs on your cuff, so separate them out a 1 1/2″ or so.
  • With your ribbon firmly in place tie a bow on the top of your cuff, aligning its center with your back seam. If you wish to place a pearl on the center of the bow, you may use your white thread to fix the pearl to the ribbon. If not, then thread your needle again with the thread color that matches your ribbon and sew the along the ’square’ or center of your ribbon make sure to catch all of your layers. Turn the tails and apply a thin coat of Clear Coat Nail polish to the raw edges so that the ribbon will not fray.

Thus, wrist cuffs of Lolita dress are made! Aren’t they cute? Then you can sew the other parts according to the similar method.

However, it seems like all of these are big projects for someone and need good patience. If you don't have good handwork and enough time to make a lolita dress by yourselves, with much voice aroud you, why not try to buy a lolita dress from online stores. Or now check the lolita promotion page to get discounted and quality lolita dress.

Lolita Is Not The Fashion Of Playing Cuteness

Recently, I got known from one of my friends that she has no courage to wear a cute Lolita dress walking on the street and dating with her boyfriend even through she really loves this style, or she only wears at home. She said she doesn't want to be thought of playing cuteness.

It seems like that is indeed a problem. Usually, it is great and accepted for a girl aged between 15 and 20 or younger children to wear a Lolita dress. However, a girl or woman over 20 years old is felt weird and even thought of playing cuteness. Lolita fashion always give us deep impression on cuteness and beauty, so many people think it is proper for young girls and children to wear. Otherwise, in fact it should be calling from the inside; Lolita fashion reflects a kind of great psychology of keeping young and optimistic in some way. Personally, Lolita is not called a game of playing cuteness and is not the expression of inner immature. In Japan, most of women and girls love Lolita, and you can see many mothers wear Lolita clothing together with their children. According to investigation, most of people feel depressive in such a strongly competitive society.

Besides, Lolita fashion is a voiceless struggle against the main stream fashion of nudity that is high popularized around the modern world rather than a game of playing cuteness. More and more girls chase after sexy and hot fashion. Of course, it doesn't mean all women wear thigh high skirts and low cut blouse on the street are bad. Everyone has every opinion. But much expose of skin for young girls is more rebarbative and unacceptable.

Lolita Fashion And Cosplay

black and white cosplay loita from Demonbane
Many people confuse whether Lolita fashion is a part of Cosplay. Even some mistake for they are the same. Actually, there are key differences between the two.

Lolita fashion refers to a kind of clothing style started in Japan. This style is characterized by ruffles, lace and bows, and adored by most young girls, and also impress us with cuteness and elegance. A proper Lolita should look elegant, modest and classy, so there is no Lolita dress of low quality.

However, Cosplay is just a kind of role play game. Cosplayers are more likely to focus on replaying the character or the stories, so they actually have low expectations on the costumes they wear. Cosplayers tend to care more about whether they looking cool enough in their costumes.

Due to fast development of Lolita fashion all over the world, some cosers like to integrate Lolita design to cosplay, thus it is usually seen some girls wear Lolita-typed clothing but not real lolita since their dresses accurately look like costumes. We call this type of Lolita for Cosplay Lolita.

Cosplay Lolita is less modest and elegant than proper Lolita. This Lolita cosplay costumes are usually wore at Anime or game conventions and these Lolita cosers usually cosplay some Anime character such as Misa Amane from Death Note who often wears Lolita typed clothing.

elegant gothic lolita
Although it is not proper to put Lolita fashion and Cosplay together, Cosplay Lolita indeed brings us much pleasure and also helps us save much. After all, Lolita is so expensive hobby and not everyone can afford it. In addition, Cosplay Lolita is more flexible and optional. This gives you chance to add innovative and loved design for your clothing.

Four Main Lolita Style: Gothic, Sweet, Classic And Punk

There are many types of Lolita dress and even now some desingers have changed it into modern twist. However, whatever styles the Lolita dresses have and how they can change. Lolita clothing still keep its essential elements decorated with elegant lace, bows and ruffles. As far as a lolita clothing mainstream, it has four main style types including gothic lolita, sweet lolita, classic lolita and punk lolita. Each type of lolita style has its own characteristic.

Elegant Gothic Lolita

The Gothic Lolita is the most popular now and began in Japan in the late 1990s and now has gradually spread around the world including Asia, Europe and North America.

Actually, Gothic Lolita is a combination of the Gothic and Lolita fashion that many Japanese girls love, sometimes shortened to Gotholi(ゴスロリ, gosu rori?) or EGL. Although GothLoli is correct term, it is only applied to the specific Gothic branch but not all the Lolita fashion. EGL is an abbreviation of the term Elegant Gothic Lolita which was coined by Japanese musician Manna to describe his new label of Lolita clothing line.

The Gothic Lolita dresses are designed to make girls to look like a doll. It sometimes is characterized by darker color like black, dark blues, purples and pink with accents of white. However, the combination of black and white is the foundation upon which lolita style is based.  Now these gothic designs are not like what people think are dark and evil-looking clothing symboled death, terro and mystery. In fact, it is presenting a Victorian girl look instead of traditional Goth wardrobe.

Gothic Lolita love to accentuate that youthful and school girl look, so the lace, ribbons, trims and frills are always in full force. Gothic Lolita lovers like to wear boots and platform shoes to show off their youth.

In addition, another important aspect of your ensemble is that gothic Lolitas are commonly matched with accessories such as miniature top hats, lace headdresses, parasols and canes. These can make it seem more authentic.

Top 8 Tips To Be A Really Elegant Lolita

What you do can make you to be a really elegant Lolita? You need to keep in mind the following tips.

1. Material: Lolita fashion is mainly representative of the Victorian and Rococo eras. So a proper Lolita dress should look classy and modest like a porcelain doll. The dress style is just delicate and the fabric of your dress is normally made from nice cotton with cotton lace instead of any kind of costume satin or stretch velvet which may discount your dress look. Look for more of lightweight cotton with high quality. The Internet is big resource and there are many online stores like Trustedeal.com(http://www.trustedeal.com)where you can find cheap Lolita dress with high cotton quality.

2. Skirt and blouse: Wear a skirt no more than two or three inches above your knee for non-erololi. It can be longer if you like. Erololi skirt can be shorter than usual but still keep safe to bend over in. Mini-skirt is not absolutely permitted. If the neckline of your dress is too low, wear a blouse underneath. Modesty is incredibly important.

3. Undergarments: Undergarment is necessary for an elegant Lolita as you may expose when you bend down in short skirts. Lolitas usually wear a style of undergarment called a pannier which is created from two or three layers of crinoline netting. This style of undergarment gives the skirt portion a cupcake-like shape. Of course, a square-dance petticoat or a hoop skirt can also be wore, but you must make sure whether they can flow well with your skirt and can look like you are wearing cupcake around your waist. Otherwise, bloomers are also another important undergarment. Bloomers are lace-trimmed short pants. When wearing a bloomer, you should try to keep them hidden and know what length is proper.

4. Socks: Don't wear socks too tights. It is looking weird.

5. Shoes: A proper Lolita can be found wearing mary-janes with low heel or platform or a cute pair of sandals.

6. Hair: Don't just throw your hair back into a ponytail while in your Lolita finest. Lolitas can wear their hair in buns, pigtail, straight, curly and puffy with bangs or without. In short, the hair style should look elegant.

7. Lace: An elegant Lolita dress is never drowned into lace. It should have good balance in the amount. Many quality dresses don't even have lace on them.

8. Accessories: Don't wear cat ears, wings and any other non-clothing item. They may make your dress look like a costume. Wear cross jewelry or other religious symbols or bats, coffins if you are in a style of gothic. These accessories can enhance the effect.

What Is Lolita And Lolita Fashion?

Lolita is a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, first written in English and published in 1955 in Paris, later translated by the author into Russian and published in 1958 in New York. The book is internationally famous for its innovative style and infamous for its controversial subject: the protagonist and unreliable narrator, middle-aged Humbert Humbert, who becomes obsessed and sexually involved with a 12-year-old girl named Dolores Haze. The novel was adapted to film by Stanley Kubrick in 1962, and again in 1997 by Adrian Lyne.
Lolita film in 1997
However, Lolita fashion is a subculture originating in Japan. Primarily influenced by Victorian clothing and costumes from the Rococo period, today’s Lolita has made its way into a unique fashion by adding gothic and original design elements such as lace, ribbons to the look. From this, Lolita fashion has evolved into mainly four sub styles including gothic Lolita, sweet Lolita, classic Lolita and punk Lolita. Normally, the Lolita look consists primarily of a knee length skirt or dress, headdress, blouse, petticoat, knee high socks or stockings and rocking horse or high heel/platform shoes. Although the origin of Lolita fashion is unclear, it is likely the movement started in the late 1970s when famous labels including Pink House, Milk and Angelic Pretty began selling clothes that would be considered "Lolita" by today's standards. Shortly after that came Baby and The Stars Shine Bright. In the 1990s, Lolita fashion became better recognized, with bands like Malice Mizer coming into popularity.
Lolita fashion show
In Lolita fashion, it is generally accepted that "Lolita" does not refer to Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel.Adherents present themselves more as Victorian children or porcelain dolls and prefer to look "cute" or "beautiful" rather than "sexy". While there are Lolitas who agree that the term 'Lolita' does not necessarily have anything to do with sex at all,Lolita fashion can even be considered a movement where girls ranging from pre-teens to late 20s fight the current fashion with modesty. It allows a woman to feel young, cute, beautiful or off-limits, depending on which type of Lolita a girl chooses to be.
Today, Lolita fashion is becoming increasingly popular and specially is adored by most young people. No longer a fashion confined within Janpan, it is getting development due to Internet and media industry. It is sometimes seen many lolita clubs and lolita lovers from different countries such as United States, United Kingdom, Canada and others. More and more people wear a lolita dress on the street and we can also see more lolita fashion shows on the runway and some famous stars also love lolita dress.
